The Afterglow Of GRBs

چکیده

Models where relativistic jets from merger or accretion induced collapse in compact binary systems produce cosmological gamma ray bursts (GRBs) also predict that GRBs are accompanied by delayed emission of high energy photons, TeV neutrinos, X-rays, optical photons and radio waves. Their emission mechanisms are similar to those responsible for their emissions by blazars during gamma ray flares. The recently observed afterglow of GRB 970228 in X-rays and optical photons is well accounted by such models. In particular, the predicted power-law spectrum, time delay which is inversely proportional to frequency and a power-law decay with time which is energy independent, are all in excellent agreement with the observations.

Indication of Two Classes in the Swift Short Gamma-Ray Bursts from the XRT X-Ray Afterglow Light Curves

We present the discovery of two distinct classes in the Swift short duration gamma-ray bursts (S-GRBs) from the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) X-ray afterglow light curve. We find that about 40% of the Swift S-GRBs have an X-ray afterglow light curves which only lasts less than 104 seconds after the burst trigger (hereafter short-lived S-GRBs). On the other hand, another 60% of S-GRBs have a long lastin...

Are short γ - ray bursts collimated ? GRB 050709 , a flare but no break

From the small sample of afterglow lightcurves of short duration γ-ray bursts (GRBs), the decays are rapid, roughly following a power-law in time. It has been assumed that the afterglow emission in short GRBs is collimated in jets in the same way as in long GRBs. An achromatic break in a short GRB afterglow lightcurve would therefore be strong evidence in favour of collimation in short GRBs. We...

According to the internal-external shocks model for γ-ray bursts (GRBs), the GRB is produced by internal shocks within a relativistic flow while the afterglow is produced by external shocks with the ISM. We explore the early afterglow emission. For short GRBs the peak of the afterglow will be delayed, typically, by few dozens of seconds after the burst. For long GRBs the early afterglow emissio...

Observational Prospects for Afterglows of Short Duration Gamma-ray Bursts

If the efficiency for producing γ-rays is the same in short duration (<∼ 2 s) Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) as in long duration GRBs, then the average kinetic energy of short GRBs must be ∼ 20 times less than that of long GRBs. Assuming further that the relativistic shocks in short and long duration GRBs have similar parameters, we show that the afterglows of short GRBs will be on average 10–40 times...

The late X-ray afterglow of gamma-ray bursts.

We have developed a functional fit which can be used to represent the entire temporal decay of the X-ray afterglow of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The fit delineates and parameterizes well-defined phases for the decay: the prompt emission; an initial steep decay; a shallow plateau phase; and finally, a powerlaw afterglow. For 20% of GRBs, the plateau phase is weak, or not seen, and the initial powe...

Possible effects of pair echoes on gamma-ray burst afterglow emission

High-energy emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is widely expected but had been sparsely observed until recently when the Fermi satellite was launched. If > TeV gamma rays are produced in GRBs and can escape from the emission region, they are attenuated by the cosmic infrared background photons, leading to regeneration of ∼ GeV-TeV secondary photons via inverse-Compton scattering. This second...
